I’ve just now managed to catch up on the movies I missed from last year — the ones I felt like watching, anyway — so I guess now is as good a time as any to redo my top 10 from last year. I, like many other people who spend all their free time on the internet, have a frustrating obsession with lists. Most lists, including this one, are pretty poorly written, but I just can’t shake my fascination with them. (That said, I don’t browse digg or Reddit for lists. I just like reading them when I come across them.) Anyway, here’s the 2009 edition of my top 10 films of 2008. And even more lists.

Notes:

One of the most bizarre things I’ve heard about Synecdoche, New York is that many people wished the film had been directed by someone like Spike Jonze or Michel Gondry so that the screenplay could have been “reined in,” or something to that effect. I have no idea why those people would want something like that. Jonze and Gondry are amazing, but there’s value in seeing the unfiltered vision of someone like Charlie Kaufman. And considering that the movie was a financial failure, I’m glad Kaufman went all out, because I don’t know if he’ll get the same freedom as a director again. Side note: I have to give credit to Angie J. Han, who managed to enhance my initial viewing of the movie with her brief review. (For those seeking out actual discussion of Synecdoche, The /Film crew had a pretty good After Dark review of it featuring none other than Angie herself.)
I have no apologies about placing Forgetting Sarah Marshall so high on this list. I think I’ve seen it at least eight times. Last year, I watched it in its entirety three days in a row, which is probably as sad as Jason Segel’s sweatpants sequence, but whatever. In my mind, it’s behind only The 40-Year-Old Virgin as far as Apatow-directed or Apatow-produced films are concerned.
Kung Fu Panda is fucking awesome.
